If you have been stuck at home during the summer, it has been a normal routine to turn on the television and slouch all day, draining one’s self on junk television shows (especially on non-cable connections) and one regular scene are your commercials. Saw the latest commercial on the better laundry soap according to washing machine brands? Or the fight against the better telecommunication company serving iPhone users? Or maybe, found out how to do an instant dish, in this case a chicken inasal dish, turn out to be so appetizing using a seasoning ingredient? All these things sum up to what we call as advertising but what retains to our minds are the ones that have an instant kick that may tickle our minds and make us say “Hey, that was funny!” or we might say “Never thought of that?” Here are my top 5 memorable commercials:

1. Datu Puti Vinegar with Elizabeth and Derek Ramsey: “Sino ang nanay mo?” would be the first thing that would come up to mind. The comical charm of Elizabeth Ramsey and gandang lalaki of Derek might have swayed you to buy this product and yes, their tandem is so cute that you wish you were Elizabeth; a very effective way to get that quick recall of the product.

2. Sting Power Pacq with Manny Pacquiao: Considered as the best boxer of some sports magazine, Manny Pacquiao’s endorsement list stretches more as this energy drink names it after him. What makes this commercial witty is the use of the boxing career of the People’s Champ and we still have to prove if we’ll be energized and might get rich drinking this.

3. Tanduay Ice with Lourd de Vera: Considered as a new soul in giving out spicy commentary on television, Lourd’s “bakit ang hilig natin magbigay ng kulay?” commercial made this guy more renowned simply by having this liquor brand. Lourd is a writer, columnist and “social trendsetter” which makes him a brand himself.

4. Argentina Corned Beef with Solenn, Anne and Georgina: These ladies are not new to any sexiest women’s list and if Derek was an eye candy with the vinegar commercial, housemates Sol, Curt and George would be your ideal roommates and it would be a house made in heaven to be living in the same roof.

5. Joy Ultra with Micheal V: Micheal V is not new to making clever commercials and with this great genius, Joy dishwashing soap has sure made quality commercials with him. His artistry in delivering his lines and the facial expression suites him best. Definitely, Micheal V can endorse any product, just give him the script and he’s do fantastic.

Latest news on the dispute of the Philippines and China has reached critical level as China continues to intimidate the Philippines as to the ownership of Scarborough shoal or the Panatag Island by allowing large sea crafts to pass along Philippine ships, showing of their large and powerful artilleries.

What has been the Philippine government doing? Simple, scream on the top of its lungs that we are being “bullied” by China and that is it. It is such a shame for our country to simply do this and not take action; to the right agencies and offices; we allow injustice and inappropriate child-like actions to continue which is truly offensive to some of us because we are taken lightly by other countries, and in this case, China. If the Philippine government is confident enough that this island truly belongs to us and no hidden treaty was made, then, it is then advised to visit the United Nations and file a formal complaint against the “bully”. If China has been funding most investors in the country, it does not mean that we allow this to happen to us. In a civil and diplomatic way, we can share our insights and tell the truth to what really is happening to us and China.

How child-like can this government be by just screaming “foul” for 2 weeks more or less? Are we really that desperate to keep goodwill with other countries yet allow them to ridicule us? What does it reflect to us as a country then?

The scorching heat has raised the intensity of summer. With this type of weather, everyone has been looking for solutions to beat it and it has been customary for most of us to cool down drinking our favorite thirst quenchers. My favorite? Nestea Iced Tea. I am definitely not paid to write this down but it has been a family treat to mix down our official summer drink. We officially bond at home drinking Nestea. We talk of almost anything, from my first job, to my brother’s studies and also talk about our dreams and future as a family. It has been quite some time that we had moments to bond and share, we rarely talk during meals because we have different vacant schedules to eat together during weekdays and now, since we are having this free time, having deep conversations relives of what was then; a family full of conversations and sharing. Simple things in life should not be taken for granted. During this summer time, one must be able to take this time to simply catch up with family members. Friends have been part of your school life and I think this time should be invested in quality instants like eating together, watching your favorite movie or to a simple moment of drinking your favorite thirst quencher this summer, Nestea Iced Tea Every second counts, share the love.

21 years is not easy. It takes many people to build a fully competitive, compassionate and courageous being. As I celebrate my 22^nd year, I simply have to look back to the moments that I treasure; the moment I laughed so hard that I forgot how to breathe, the moment I felt so bad that I wanted to kill myself, the time when I ate so much that I don’t want to move and so many memories that I cherish, those years plus one will now come to a chapter summary for now.

My wish list? First thing, thank Him for restoring and reaching this age. I am not getting any younger therefore, I have to enjoy every moment that passes by; grab opportunities while they’re still there and make every moment count. I want to definitely have my first employment. I want to be employed in order to support my family already. Yes, it will be my first job if ever I get hired and I am really hoping that I get through. Next wish, I think I need you now. I need that someone who is not after the fun moments only but will be with me all throughout, no matter what. I am not a player and I need a serious person who can take me as the real me. I am not that desperate but it would be better if you have that inspiration, aside from Christ, to push you further and lastly, continue what I do best, I want to renew my commitment to Christ on still do Sunday School classes, be a choir member and instrumentalist and help in our church activities. I have been a teacher since I was in High School and now, it is another episode ending. Lord, I simply need to recommit the tasks I am doing; rekindle the fire in me that I may burn better and brighter for Thee; inspire me most by Your Word and yes, it is definitely up to You on what path You want me to ponder.

It is an understatement that I thank my relatives, especially from my mother side, for all the effort they have exhausted and worn out for me and my family; again, heartfelt gratitude will be returned. To my high school friends who never cease to change, even if we seldom see each other, that constant connection will never wear out because you never forget me in your prayers. To my college friends, thank you for being my noise and laugh-trip buddies, as we age, may we continue to wear that smile that reminds us of who we are.

What else can I do? I cannot stop being 22. As they say, let us age not with our faces, but with our intellect, emotional stability and experiences while we live. Happy birthday to me.

Subject: What Is Next After Graduation

It has been a week or two since we trod the halls of our Alma matter, Xavier University, but then, it is one dilemma for graduated students on what to do after. For a graduate of education, it is definitely sure to take the licensure examinations for teachers and pursue teaching. But definitely one personal problem is, will I be truly working as soon as I graduate? Or will I still wait for the examinations and pass it once in order to get the license? Or to the greatest extend, go for what I truly want? These are questions that I wish to answer soon.

I have been a fan of music. I can sing. I can play two instruments and I love performing. Ever since in grade school, I have been a constant performer in our foundation day. I have tried everything, from Philippine dances like Pandanggo sa Ilaw, Itik-itik and many more to cultural dances of the Chinese. I have also been immersed in special trainings in school for hostings and school performances. I love doing those things, sing in the glee club and doing almost everything in line with performing but in college, I did not have the leisure to join any of the many clubs that can even master and continue my craft; I was a bit shy because college is different but now, I have finished college and the question is, what now?

I shared to a friend of my dilemma, I told her that I now have problems on what to do for the meantime but she shared an interesting tip in order for me not to regress in the future, try to make a deal with your parents that within the year, you do what you want. That idea fascinated me. It has constantly been “their” way that I think, I need to also satisfy what I want to do. In fact, I have tried to apply in some companies that would consider my abilities as a performer and a person. My friend also reminded me that I should settle the things that I want to do now than to give it off to my offspring and make my frustration their dream which should not be the case.

To finally close our talk, I was once again encouraged to be who I want to be since this part of my life is now my own, no pretenses but just the genuine you.

Subject: Student-Teacher Infatuation

“I love you, maam”, “Gimingaw biya ko nimo”, and “Asa man ka? Dungan ta lunch” are only some of the many lines heard from students addressed to their student-teachers, especially when they are still minors. These lines sometimes bother us and may also cause us confusion on what kind of treatment we will be giving to the student involved. In some cases, other ST’s tend to consult their critic teachers and ask for counsel on how to handle this particular situation. In other cases, if the students are not the one in-love, ST’s are even the one who are infatuated and attracted to their students and continually think that they are just in the same age as them (this case covers most public schools; referring to repeaters and working students). How do we handle these situations? What appropriate actions should be done? Is there any way that we can do something to help them? Here are some points to consider:

1. Be intelligent enough. – As student-teachers, we are already in the transition stage of being a student to become a full-fledged teacher. With this, may we instill in our hearts that during these stages, our students’ hormones are rapidly changing, confusing them on how to react to this certain change. It is definitely normal for students to feel these emotions toward their teacher and definitely, we need to understand these things. One proper way to address this concern is to let our brains work; let them know that we are only here as a friend and will never be their significant other.

2. Do not avoid, simply act the same. – Preferably, other student-teachers would be anxious in coming to class and do their lessons because the student is there, don’t be. Simply act as if nothing is in between you (which obviously is true). Instead, as teachers, we may use this as a motivation to our students that they will do better in school, be more attentive and have a more interesting way of seeing learning. We may consider this as a difficult task but what else can we do, be absent in class and compromise other students’ learnings because of one?

3. If infatuated to a student, keep it to yourself. – Never ever reveal or confess these emotions to the student involved, it is too risky for the student’s to be caught in a tight spot. Be discreet and plainly be in authority inside the class. Do not be too obvious that during recitation, board work or any classroom interaction, it is that student that you always call up. Consider yourself placed in that student’s situation, it would sometimes deform their morale because classmates would be teasing him or may cause them insecurities because the teacher has preferable option to the student.

4. If the student is getting aggressive with his feelings, be prepared. – If the student is already sending you flowers, calling you during late nights, asking for a date, then it might be time that you need to consider talking to the student first. If the student cannot still get the point, seek immediate higher authority, maybe the school counselor, the child’s parent or to the highest extent, have a conference with the parents and school official. In that way, as a teacher, you are not also pressured on what particular course of action you will be taking.

These are only some of many ideas and ways you may want to consider taking when you feel that they are a bit too close for comfort. If you think that you and that student is already prepared for a romantic relationship, it is just and professional enough to have that relationship if he/she is not your student already and this is only applicable in case to case basis only. I think we all have seen that Maalaala Mo Kaya episode wherein the teacher and student had a relationship. Moral values define it as indecent but when your heart skips a beat for that someone, maybe, it will then harm everything that hinders its way.

Subject: Student Apathy

Student apathy is a reaction or a reply to student leader’s misrepresentation. In layman’s term, some student leaders do not represent the real studentry. If we could remember, in my 5 years stay here in XU, only a few student leaders deemed to be effective. Why? It is definitely because of how they run their government and also is caused by their charisma and interaction. Rapport is an important factor to reach across your jurisdiction. We can always be good leaders but what is leadership and being elected when in one point in time, the voter would realize that the vote casted seems to be a waste of time and effort? To remember, being approachable is one key to become successful and one virtue of being a good leader yet now, the apathy of students is on its rise again.

As I read today’s Crusader article on campus politics, I can’t help myself but to simply react on the ideas posted. Believe me, I was once an active member and participant of student volunteerism activities but now, I definitely know why students turn the other cheek this time; it is obviously caused by this misrepresentation. They say these things, things that sound so good yet after 2 months in service, they start to fade, we vote for these people yet, do we know them personally? Do we know their work ethics? Do we know how they respond to pressure? Do we know how they are as students? These questions are definitely essential before we look for the ones we may call, our leaders. It is a big slap on all our faces that we, the studentry, are now halting to express these rights which is not our fault.

I have been vocal about this year’s TG line up because I was once an officer. After our term, I was applauding the next people in line because they were obviously better than us. The people after them were also good because they did not allow me to criticize their work because they too were challenged by the needs of the education students and now, I am seeing a set of people who I cannot consider as competent. They may look appealing but is it all we need, is it all just by the appeal? I think we need to put them in a dissecting pan and open them up to see what their credentials are, what they have achieved and their contributions. I cannot bear to see the next TG under their hands; platform wise, too generic and character wise, so unreal.

My tip for you? You can exercise your power to vote, but just make sure you will not regret it.
